It is not surprising that most of the top ten best selling albums of all time are rock albums that were made in the 60s and 70s, before the Internet and music downloads.

The two exceptions in the Top Ten Best Selling Albums of All Times, are the country music albums of Shania Twain and Garth Brooks, both recorded on Nashville labels in the late 90s

Eagles: Their Greatest Hits is the Best Selling Album of All Times

According to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975 by The Eagles is the best-selling album ever with 29 million copies sold. Michael Jackson’s Thriller is second, followed by Led Zeppelin IV, Pink Floyd's The Wall, and AC/DC's Back in Black.

It's unlikely the Eagles will ever be surpassed. As the music industry often laments, album sales are down in recent years, thanks in part to music downloads available on the Internet.

Eagles, Jackson, Zepplin, Shania, Beatles, Garth AC/DC

The Eagles – Their Greatest Hits 1971 -1975

Believe it or not, but the Eagles were originally gathered together by a record producer to be Linda Ronstadt's back-up band.

The Greatest Hits album draws from what is commonly regarded as The Eagles’ pre-Joe Walsh era - the first four albums, The Eagles' early albums were a hybrid of country, pop, folk, and rock, and they virtually defined the southern California rock sound. And these 10 hit songs capture the Eagles at the top of their game playing music that turned out to be the right combination for the best selling album of all times

Favorite Eagles Hit Songs Include:

  • Desperado
  • Take it easy
  • Lyin' eyes
  • Tequila Sunrise
  • Take it to the limit.
  • One Of These Nights
  • Best Of My Love

Come on Over, Country Pop from Shania Twain

Country music purists call it professionally crafted country-pop, but Shania Twain music fans couldn’t get enough of her hit songs on Come on Over like:

  • That Don't Impress Me Much

This list is based on the number of units sold. The Beatles' White album sold 9.5 million albums but is counted as having sold 19 million UNITS because this list counts the double album as two units.
Abbey Road actually is the best selling Beatles album at 12 + million.
The two greatest hits albums ( the so-called Red album and the Blue albums) were also two-record sets and come in on the list ahead of Abbey Road in terms of UNITS sold. This has to be kept in mind when looking at these lists.

I would have to agree with previous Guest. The Eagles are a major blot on the landscape in terms of EVERYTHING. The suck like a man in a desert with a 20 mile straw to a can of dr pepper.

The Beatles were OK, but "You're 16" by Ringo, now that's true art. Peace & Love

Yes, the Eagles certainly do suck. To mention them in the same breath as 1st tier rock bands like Led Zeppelin and The Beatles is sacrilege. They're not even 2nd tier if you ask me. They're maybe a small step above garbage like Bad Company and Bachman Turner Overdrive.

This list is outdated. Both Thriller and the Eagles Greatest Hits are both tied in the US, but Thriller remains the best selling album worldwide.

Uh...this list is WAY outdated! Alanis Morisette's Jagged Little Pill has sold 33 million units worldwide since 2009 making it the biggest selling album in history by a female artist. Not even Madonna has ever done that. And Michael Jackson's Thriller has sold 75 million worldwide.

Is no-one paying attention to the fact that this article was written in mid 2008? A lot has happened since then; "Spell Check" has been around even longer. (Sorry, Karen, couldn't resist but it's likely no-one will pick up the inference anyway.)
